Right-to-repair smartphone ruling loosens restrictions on industrial, farm IoT

Last week, the tech press made a big deal out of a ruling by the Librarian of Congress and the U.S. Copyright Office to allow consumers to break vendors’ digital rights management (DRM) schemes in order to fix their own smartphones and digital voice assistants. According to The Washington Post, for example, the ruling — which goes into effect Oct. 28 — was a big win for consumer right-to-repair advocates. To read this article in full, please click here READ MORE HERE…

Cisco sets $2.3B deal for unified access, multi-factor authentication security firm Duo

Cisco said today it had closed the $2.35 billion deal it made for network identity, authentication security company Duo.According to Cisco, Duo’s zero trust security model authorizes secure connections to all applications based on the trustworthiness of users and devices. Duo’s cloud-delivered technology lets IT professionals set and enforce risk-based, adaptive access policies and get enhanced visibility into users’ devices and activities.  As more devices come onto the network remotely this issue takes on more importance.“Outdated devices are particularly vulnerable to being compromised, which can easily spiral into a full-blown, major breach,” wrote Richard Archdeacon, Duo Advisory CISO about a recent Duo study on remote access security.   “Organizations don’t necessarily need to block individuals from using their personal devices, but they do need to re-shape their security models to fit these evolving working practices…If you don’t know what’s connecting to the network, how can you protect data from being compromised? “To read this article in full, please click here READ MORE HERE…

ICANN sets plan to reinforce internet DNS security

In a few months, the internet will be a more secure place. That’s because the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has voted to go ahead with the first-ever changing of the cryptographic key that helps protect the internet’s address book – the Domain Name System (DNS). [ Now see: The hidden cause of slow internet and how to fix it. ]
The ICANN Board at its meeting in Belgium this week, decided to proceed with its plans to change or “roll” the key for the DNS root on Oct. 11, 2018. It will mark the first time the key has been changed since it was first put in place in 2010.To read this article in full, please click here READ MORE HERE…

The Risk of IoT Security Complacency

Trend Micro recently surveyed 1,150 IT executives globally. We found a gap between the perceived risk from IoT and the planned mitigation for that risk. Most senior executives recognize that IoT can introduce security risk to the organization, but few will invest resources to remediate that risk. Click here for more details. Senior leadership should…

Securing the Convergence of IT with OT

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is the leading edge of the convergence of Operational Technology (OT) with IT. This convergence begins with network connectivity but requires enhancements in operational procedures, technology, and training as well. Beginning with the network, IT and OT use different protocols. Within the OT world, vendors have created many proprietary…

Back to Basics: Why We Need to Encourage More Secure IoT Development

The Internet of Things (IoT) is radically reshaping the way we live and work. Before our very eyes, organizations are becoming more agile, efficient and cost effective to run, all while consumers marvel at the wonders of the smart home, fitness trackers and connected cars. There’s just one major problem: Much of this new infrastructure…

Carrier Grade Security Means … Using Carrier Grade Security

It’s a common mistake in enterprises to copy-paste security solutions from a peer. Strategies can be recycled, but sadly with even very similar businesses almost always have radically different IT and security requirements. I recall one hospital that looked at a nearly identical peer hospital that was only a few miles away. Much of the…

Our Extensive Survey on IoT Cybersecurity Has Remarkable Top Consequence

Trend Micro recently conducted a global survey of IT and security decision makers. When asked about the top consequence to IoT security, many would have expected it to be data loss. However, the top consequence named with 52% of respondents was “Loss of Customer Trust.” IoT has a physical component that is unusual in the…

Preparing for Shadow OT: A Hospital Case Study

The convergence of IT and OT is happening more rapidly than IT expects. Once upon a time, IT was so expensive that enterprises built entire departments to prioritize spending and efficiently manage those costly investments. Now, IT is so inexpensive that any individual who wants IT can buy it (or rent it). This is “Shadow…

Q&A: Jeff Wilbur of the Online Trust Alliance on why enterprise IoT security is a lot like BYOD

As consumer Internet of Things (IoT) devices inevitably find their way into the workplace, IT pros need to isolate them from the rest of the enterprise network, perhaps on a network of their own, so they don’t become backdoors exploitable by attackers, according to the head of the Online Trust Alliance.Jeff Wilbur, the director of the alliance, which is an initiative within the larger Internet Society, says that it is better to embrace employees’ IoT devices and allow them to be used safely than to ban them and risk their unauthorized, unprotected use that could undermine network security. To read this article in full, please click here READ MORE HERE…
